IFTA (INTERNATIONAL FUEL TAX AGREEMENT)
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement among the 10 provinces
in Canada and 48 states of United States of America that simplifies the reporting
by inter jurisdictional carriers (IJCs) of motor fuel use taxes. The Agreement allows
IJCs operating qualified motor vehicle(s), to report and pay taxes owing to all
jurisdictions to single base jurisdiction. Every carrier willing to operate among
Canadian Provinces or United States has to register under IFTA. All carriers registered under IFTA have to file quarterly IFTA
fuel tax returns with their Province or State, to report their operations in each
IFTA jurisdiction. The Ministry of Revenue forwards an IFTA fuel tax return to every
carrier at least thirty days prior to the due date. Filing due dates are April
30th, July 31st, October 31st, and January 31st.
